Urban Planner, Brownfields Redevelopment

Are you an urban land planner looking for an exciting new opportunity? Do you enjoy working with local communities and non-profits to revitalize their neighborhoods and improve their overall economic development? Do you want to do meaningful and impactful work helping to rejuvenate previously contaminated sites? Then this might be the right opportunity for you!

ICF is currently seeking an Urban Planner to work within our Survey, Policy, Health, Environment, Regulation, and Economics (SPHERE) team. If successful, you will support the EPA's Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization (OBLR) in their efforts to help communities, states, tribes, and other stakeholders to assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse contaminated properties. This is a great position for a junior-level professional who will join our team in Cambridge, MA or Fairfax, VA.

What you'll do:
  • Apply academic and past work experience/knowledge to a wide range of technical assistance projects.
  • Support the development of site reuse strategies, conceptual reuse alternatives, and site plans covering a broad range of reuse scenarios including mixed use, housing, open space, renewable energy, and infill development.
  • Perform research, data collection, and quantitative data analysis in support of a broad range of site redevelopment projects, including compiling, organizing, and synthesizing data and information; and preparing graphs, charts, tables, and figures displaying results.
  • Support the development of a wide range of client work products, including reports, conceptual designs, action plans, presentations, and fact sheets.
  • Support a wide range of stakeholder outreach and engagement activities including in-person and virtual community engagement (e.g., charettes, workshops, meetings, etc.) and the development of associated outreach and communication materials.
  • Interact directly with federal, state, and local clients, creating and maintaining successful and professional work relationships.


What you'll need:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, environmental planning, or related technical field.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience supporting technically oriented projects in community revitalization and economic development areas, with priority on brownfields site redevelopment or other related infill development.
  • Knowledge of current planning and policy trends related to land use planning and economic development is desirable.


Professional skills and experience were looking for:
  • Team oriented individual with a "can-do" spirit who is adaptable to learning new topics and capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel, as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in conducting quantitative analyses using Microsoft Access and Excel, and spatial analysis using GIS.
